When Melyssa and Caleb welcomed their second son, Jackson, everything seemed normal. The pregnancy and birth were what any doctor would consider routine. But just 24 hours later, their world changed in an instant.
Jackson was airlifted to OSF Children’s Hospital in Peoria due to low oxygen levels.
At first, Melyssa and Caleb were told he simply needed a little more time and that they would likely be home within a few days. Instead, those first few uncertain days turned into 22 days in the neonatal intensive care unit, followed by months of outpatient appointments, sleep studies, surgery, and round-the-clock oxygen support at home.
In the middle of that fear and uncertainty, Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Central Illinois became a source of comfort, support, and stability.
A neonatal intensive care unit nurse first told Melyssa and Caleb about Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Central Illinois and explained that it was there to support families in need, regardless of their financial circumstances. At first, they hesitated. Like many families, they wondered if someone else might need it more.
Still, they decided to stay for those first few days while they navigated the unknown.
They are so grateful they did.
What began as a short-term stay quickly became something much more meaningful. Throughout Jackson’s medical journey and the many visits that followed, Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Central Illinois gave their family a place to rest, recharge, and simply be together. Whether they needed a room for the night or a place to spend a few hours during the day, Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Central Illinois was there.
Today, Jackson is thriving.
Looking back, Melyssa and Caleb say Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Central Illinois was a true lifesaver during one of the hardest seasons of their lives. The meals, laundry, comfortable rooms, and welcoming staff lifted an enormous weight from their shoulders when everything else felt overwhelming. Family therapy nights and connections with other families brought peace and reassurance. Walking alongside others facing their own challenges reminded them they were not alone.
For Melyssa, Caleb, and Jackson, Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Central Illinois will always be more than a place they stayed. It will always be part of their story.
Now, they are committed to giving back through financial gifts, providing meals, and encouraging others to support families who find themselves in the same position they once did.
