At just 16 years old, Miss Illinois’ Teen 2026, Brooke Herod, has already built a legacy of compassion through her nonprofit organization, The Healing Hands Projects. What began as a simple act of kindness for a friend has grown into a statewide and national mission dedicated to bringing comfort to children and families facing medical challenges.

This year, as Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Central Illinois celebrates 40 years of service, the Maddox family is celebrating a milestone of their own.
Their son, Scott, was born at Memorial Medical Center on December 20, 1986. Just three days later, their world changed. Scott developed a high-grade fever and infection and was rushed to St. John’s Neo-Natal ICU. Doctors determined he had strep B spinal meningitis. He was a very sick baby.

The Edwards family is from Quincy, Illinois, and during Amy’s pregnancy with Payton, her blood pressure spiked to a dangerous level. Doctors made the decision to transfer her to Springfield for specialized care. Payton was born 11 weeks early, weighing just 2 pounds. Amy spent one week in the hospital, and Payton spent 77 days in the NICU.
“It was the scariest thing that we’ve probably ever had to do,” Amy shared.
