Douglas Carlson, M.D. is currently the Chair of Southern Illinois University School of Medicine Pediatrics Department and Medical Director of HSHS St. John’s Children’s Hospital.  He completed his medical degree at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, Springfield, IL, and residency in pediatrics at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, St. Louis, MO.  Prior to coming to SIU and HSHS St. John’s Children’s Hospital in 2014, Dr. Carlson was with Washington University and St. Louis Children’s Hospital for over 25 years.  Dr. Carlson’s research focuses on improving processes of care. Much of that work has focused on improving access and outcomes in pediatric sedation.  Dr. Carlson is recognized internationally for his work in pediatric sedation.  Dr. Carlson continues to provide care to children and adolescents in the inpatient pediatric unit of HSHS St. John’s Hospital.  Dr. Carlson is board certified in pediatrics, pediatric emergency medicine, and pediatric hospital medicine. Dr. Carlson is the co-author of a recent book chapter titled “How Leaders in Pediatrics Can Support Women” within the textbook “Women in Pediatrics: The Past, Present and Future” (Springer 2022). Dr. Carlson joined the board in 2026.
